What are some easy home solutions for eliminating clogged drains in your bathroom? The quickest and simplest thing to use to tackle the problem is your typical plunger. What’s involved is very clear, cover the drainpipe with the plunger and push. Obviously you shouldn’t move the plunger up and down forcefully as this will be ineffective and could make the blockage worse. To achieve the desired effect, the drainage should be totally covered with the head of the plunger and then the bell-shaped rubber must be pressed down slowly; next the handle should be pulled up fast and with good enough force to produce an effective suction. The suction created when the plunger is pulled up will hopefully dislodge the material clogging the toilet, tub or sink in your bathroom. Some washbasins and bathtubs are provided with overspill openings that have to be blocked temporarily with a wet cloth for the plunger to develop effective suction.
Instead of using your plunger you can apply commercial products containing chemicals that can dissolve the blockage, for instance concentrated drains pipes cleaner. These products should be used only when the plunger has failed to clean out your bathroom drainpipe. Leave the chemical for a few minutes so that it loosens the blockage, and then use hot water to rinse out the drain, taking care not to splash yourself. As a precaution you should wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty or corrosive chemicals on. Eye protection is not a bad idea either if you plan on plunging again in case there is any residual back splash of chemical laden water. To avoid unwarranted problems from creeping up, follow the manufacturers instructions ardently.
If both the plunger and chemicals fail to alleviate the clogging problem you have, then you can try unscrewing the nuts on the P-trap with pliers or a pipe wrench to gain access to the pipe. Removing the drainpipe trap can release a sudden rush of waste water, so keep a mop and pail handy, put a bucket underneath the p-trap before you disconnect it. If you don’t want to damage the chrome finish of your pipes and also to get a better grip on the pipe, you can wrap the jaws of your wrench with electrical tape. With the trap opened, insert gloved hands to remove any debris that may be blocking the bends. If you dont find anything on the P-trap, then it means that the problem lies deeper somewhere between the trap and soil stack.
If you are trying to unclog your toilet you can use a toilet auger. If on the other hand you are attempting to unclog your tub or sink you may need to use a drainage snake. The instrument is designed in a way that it can travel deep down into your pipes. Once the snake has reached the blockage you can twist the adjustable handle which will drill into the obstruction so you can then pull the material out. The P-trap should be reconnected once the obstruction is cleared, slowly flush the drain pipe with hot water to confirm that there is no obstruction and that there are no leaks. Everything should be sealed properly after the whole process is over, the P-trap and pipes should also be checked for any leaks.
You need to take professional waste pipes clearance help in case you are unable to unclog the drain pipe by any of these methods. You will need to call a professional plumber or drains pipes service when the blockage is in the sewer or soil track or when it is due to tree roots, or when the pipe has collapsed due to some reason.
