Tips to unblock a sewer and enthrall the homeowner

One of the most serious emergencies to happen within a home is a blocked drain. Like many emergencies, there is often no warning before they occur. The worst aspect of a drains problem however is that it can cause unpleasant odours, result in flooding of your home and loss of power. A business suffering this disruption may lose customers and thus sales, and this reduction in productivity lowers staff satisfaction.

Prevention is always better than cure and here are some steps you can take to prevent blocked drainage caused by structural kinks or foreign matter:.

Remove hair clumps that collect in the waste plug hole on a regular basis.

Small objects such as combs, medicine bottles and toilet rolls should be kept away from places where there is a high probability of them falling into the toilet.

Make it a weekly habit to cleanse your bath, wash basin and shower pipe using hot water initially and then rinse with a disinfectant in order to remove the soap residue, so that it cannot accumulate deposits.

Never try to flush large objects like nappies, sanitary towels, product wrappings, etc, even though they are disposable, since they often are the items which block drain pipes.

Food leftovers and chopping waste should be composted, not pushed down the kitchen sink drain.

If food matter does fall into the sink, try to carefully pull it from the drain hole as pushing it will only jam the pipe further.

Cooking fats have a tendency to solidify when contacting cold water and should not be disposed of in the drainage system. If there is absolutely no alternative you should dilute and emulsify the fats by mixing them with hot water and of detergent. Run the water for a while after this, so that the the oil is completely flushed out and the pipes remain clear.

Following a set of regular maintenance activities one can reduce the chances of having a drain blockage.

Inspect the rain downpipes and house roof gutters for any blocks at least twice annually.

Take care when working at height but remove any accumulated debris and leaves with a trowel.

The inspection covers should be easily accessible because you can then use them to check the flow of the drains regularly.

To prevent the external drain from getting blocked, remove autumn moss, fallen leaves and other such materials regularly.

Rinsing off the external drains using hot water and disinfectant should be a regular maintenance activity.

A business can request that drains are regularly surveyed and the drainage system checked by a CCTV inspection service, to alleviate any anxieties. The CCTV will inform you of any impending blockage and you can also check the condition of the drainage system regularly by using this service.
